Student's t-test assumes both groups have the same population variance, which is rarely true for real biological data. Welch's t-test (Welch, 1947, Biometrika) does not make that assumption and adjusts the degrees of freedom accordingly, so it stays valid whether variances are equal or not. Delacre, Lakens and Leys (2017, International Review of Social Psychology) argue researchers should default to Welch's in almost every case, since it costs little when variances are equal and protects against a real error when they are not. This is the test Ampliova uses by default for every group comparison.
